How does multicultural education reflect responsive teaching to help meet the academic needs of diverse student populations?
Responsive teaching is necessary with multicultural education. Teachers and instructors need to be aware of each student as individuals to make sure they are understanding what is being taught. It is important for the students to receive help with their individual needs. They should also understand that it is okay to be different. A culturally responsive teacher will instill the importance of self- discovery to the student to help be their best self. Teachers and instructors must take in consideration of the students' native language and primary culture. It's also important to have some involvement with their family to understand their upbringing and how they are affected by their life at home with their family. Responsive teaching also includes bringing the students' culture to the classroom. The student should understand that their culture is accepted. It requires the teacher or instructor to be open minded and to view things differently from how they would normal see it in order to teach responsively. By teaching responsively, multicultural education is applied.
